Without a doubt, Tchaikovsky is one of the most renowned Russian composers. In addition to symphonies, concertos, ballets and chamber music, he also composed many piano scores and transcriptions still performed all over the world. Given his romantic, slightly melancholy personality, it is unsurprising that Tchaikovsky wrote a number of transcriptions and short pieces for the cello, which closely resembles the human voice. This nocturne is the fourth of the Six morceaux for piano that Tchaikovsky wrote in 1873. Shortly after their publication, this piece was re-written for the cello by Tchaikovsky’s friend, the outstanding cellist Wilhelm Karl Friedrich Fitzenhagen (1848-1890) .
