German composer Max Reger was a conductor, pianist and organist. He composed many romances for accordion, organ, piano, cello and violin. “The Romance in G major” was written for violin and piano. It was completed around 1902 in Munich. Just like the term suggests, a romance has no set form. They are usually short lyrical pieces lasting around two minutes, and in those two minutes a catharsis of the soul occurs. The music starts with a tranquil melody in the lower register of the instrument, and then reaches a number of climaxes in the higher registers. At the height of all this intense emotion, the piece suddenly ends in a very peaceful way. The entire piece is full of an overwhelming intensity.
