本資料庫收藏: Cello (1700), Violin (1721)

Matteo Goffriller was born on Feb. 2, 1659 in the Italian village Bressanone, along the border of Austria, and died on Feb. 23, 1742 in Venice. He came to Venice in 1685 to study how to make instruments with Martinus Kaiser, and eventually married Kaiser’s daughter and took over Kaiser’s business in 1690. From 1690 until 1710 no one in Venice could compete with Goffriller, and he seemed to have monopolized the instrument making industry in Venice for those two decades, making him the most important luthier during that time.

The Stradivari family had a lot of influence on Goffriller’s luthier techniques. He mostly made viola da gamba initially, and the first one can be traced back to 1689. Eventually Goffriller’s instruments became extremely diverse, and the larger ones were based on instruments made by the Amati family. Furthermore, due to the vastness of his clientele, his instruments vary greatly in type and quality. However, since Goffriller did not put tags on many of his instruments, it is impossible to confirm which instruments are his, and many of them are often confused with instruments made by Carlo Bergonzi from Cremona. In fact, Bergonzi did not make very many cellos. This might be why people pretended the instruments made by Goffriller were made by Bergonzi, and perhaps this is also why Goffriller’s instruments incidentally receive such high appraisals. Moreover, very few of Goffriller’s instruments have his initials M.G. branded on them, which is also something that distinguishes the instruments. At the time, most instruments had labels on them, and branding was rare.

Pablo Casals (1876-1973) began using a Goffriller cello around 1910, and almost always used Goffriller’s cellos during his entire performing career, which also subsequently increased the recognition of Goffriller’s cellos. The cellist Janos Starker (1924-1982) also had his own famous cello named Star. Yoyo Ma also uses a Goffriller cello. Goffriller had two outstanding students within the Venetian school of luthiers, Domenica Montagnana and Francesco Gobetti. His son Francesco Goffriller (1691- c.1750) was also a luthier.
