Martinus Kaiser was born in Venice, and is considered the first luthier in all of Venice. After he arrived in Venice, he worked with his uncle Matthias Kaiser, focusing on making lutes. In his later years, he eventually stopped making plucked string instruments, and started making bowed string instruments. According to Charles Beare (1727-1795), Kaiser returned to work in 1693. Maetteo Goffriller (1659-1724) was his apprentice and his son-in-law.
