Stefano Scarampella (1843-1925) was the son of amateur luthier Paulo Scarampella, and was the younger brother of Giuseppe Scarampella. He initially assisted other luthiers with their work, but eventually started making his own instruments in 1890, receiving guidance from his older brother. After his brother died in 1902, he inherited his tools and molds as well as his recipe for making varnishes. His best and most unique instruments were made during this period, which lasted until 1915 when his health began to deteriorate. In 1919 he began teaching his first pupil Gaetano Gadda, and since Scarampella’s contract with an instrument dealer had some problems, he had Gadda make an instrument each month so he could complete the business transactions.
He copied an old Mantua luthier named Giuseppe Dall’Aglio (fc. 1795-1840) when making his violins, as well as the works of his older brother Giuseppe. He used a red varnish for the bottom layer and a brownish orange or bright red for the top layer.
