Gaetano Gadda (1900-1956) was born in Mantua. In 1919, he studied how to make violins in Stefano Scarampella’s workshop, but stopped in 1924 due to his teacher’s deteriorating health, and thus inherited Scarampella’s tools and molds. He was very scrupulous in making his instruments, but his style was heavily influenced by his teacher, which made his work lack originality. In the 1940s, he started implementing the Guarneri style, but the instruments he made between WWII and 1956 are his best works because they look elegant and possess a unique quality to them.
The scrolls are of the typical Mantua style. He usually used a red varnish for the bottom layer and put a shiny brownish orange over it. His son Mario Gadda studied with him, and is currently an extremely active luthier.
