Giovanni Francesco Celoniati was an 18th century luthier of the Piedmont school. He studied with Gioffredo Cappa. After the eventual passing of Turin-based luthiers Enrico Catenar, Cappa, and Fabrizio Senta, the only active luthier left in Turin was Celoniati.
Celoniati was born into a musical family in Turin, and worked in the Savoy court. Around the time he was serving in the court, eight other people with the same last name also served as musicians in the court orchestra (5 violinists, 2 violists and 1 bassist), which can be found in the city government’s records from 1737 to 1784.
By 1702 the young Celoniati already had his own studio. The instruments he made continued the traditions of his teacher Cappa; however, certain parts of the structure also resemble those of Spirito Sorsana. The curves of the body are relatively flat and varnishes look golden yellow. Celoniati was one of the most outstanding luthiers of the Piedmont school after Cappa passed away. He worked as a luthier until he died in 1754.
