Giovanni. Grancino was the violin family representative of Milano, his grandfather was a composer names Michelangelo Grancino (1605-1669), the father Andre. Grancino was also a violin maker Musician.
Beginning about 1670, Giovanni and his brother Francesco Grancino worked together. However, comparing with Giovanni’s independent violin production, although they had the same superb technique, but the style was very different from each others. However, last known work was created in 1726.
Although Giovanni’s early works were influenced by Amati family of Cremona school, his works were full with strong personality. He used cheaper wood to produce instruments comparing with the Cremona Violin family, therefore cheaper instruments were introduced. He produced a lively panel and had a rosy texture for the appearance of his violin; moreover, having bold and deeply cut for the scroll and delicate sound hole were all the violin features for Giovanni. Early violin production of finished color was dark reddish brown, violin that’s produced after 1700 are mostly light brown color. Giovanni produced larger size of cello comparing to other Italian cello makers; therefore, there were some significant sound differences.
Giovanni's unique style of violin making had passed on to the future development of the Milan. Later on, his violin technique also bequeathed to his son, Giovanni. Pakistan Gelanqinuo (1673-1730), and his grandson Michelangelo Grancino and Francesco Grancino, and his student, Carlo. Giuseppe. Testore (c. 1660-1716).
