Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi, c. 1710-1784)

Legend has it that Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi was a pupil of Carlo Giuseppe Testore (1665-1716). He started his own instrument making business in Milan around 1750. It is also said that he learned some of his craft from Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, who arrived in Milan in 1749. Landolfi’s style of making violins is also quite different from previous generations of instrument makers in Milan, but still has a few similarities at the same time.

Landolfi’s best violin was made around the year 1755. It has a very elegant design and is a work of exceptional craftmanship. The instrument also exhibits a very obvious individual style. Most of his instruments used dark varnishes, ranging from dark reds to brownish orange colors. His violins have a splendid sound. Landolfi’s violas are also very well known, and are usually anywhere from 38.1cm to 38.9cm long, but at times can be as long as 40.6cm. His cellos are usually relatively small, but are extremely valuable and rare.

Pietro Giovanni Mantegazza was his main pupil along with his son Pietro Antonio Landolfi (c.1730-1795).
