Joseph Louis Germain (1822-1870) was born in Mirecourt and worked in several local violin making studios. In 1840 he moved to Paris and in the next five years was employed under Charles François Gand. He formed his own studio in 1862, retired in 1870 and passed away the same year. Germain showed meticulous attention to detail in all his instruments and their separate parts. His selection of varnishes was very distinctive and often used colors with various gradations. The timbre of his instruments is deeply resonant and dynamic.
