Born in 1862, Cremona, Romeo Antoniazzi (1862-1925) is the eighth son of Gaetano. At first, Romeo made violins with his father and brother. But as there were many opportunities elsewhere, he also worked in other firms such as the Barlassina’s shop and Monzino & Sons. The instability of life made his works inconsistent in quality. Romeo’s best works are imitations of the patterns of late 19th century, but not quite as refined as Riccardo’s.
We can discriminate the different periods of Romeo’s career from the varnishes: in his early period he preferred bright yellowish brown varnish, while in his late period, dark brown varnish was more frequently applied, which made the violins glimmer vaguely. Numerous kinds of labels are used by Romeo, though he did not return to his birthplace in later years, the labels still quoted “ fece in Cremona”, made in Cremona, along with a Cremonese coat of arms. He passed away in Milan, 1925.
