Leandro Bisiach, 1864-1945

Leandro Bisiach (1864-1945) was born in Casale Monferrato. He started as a violinist with expressive playing ability. The first violin he made amazingly won him a grand prize, and thus he determined to become a top violinmaker. In 1886, he moved to Milan and collaborated with Riccardo Antoniazzi, which was very beneficial to his technical maturation.

Leandro was a born businessman. He set up a workshop under his name from 1900, and gathered almost all renowned makers of that time, including the Antoniazzi family, Gaetano Sgarabotto (1878-1959), Ferdinando Garimberti (1894-1982) and Giuseppe Ornati (1887-1965). His workshop thus became the center of the Milanese school. Later his apprentices became famous teachers one after another in the International Violinmaking School “ Antonio Stradivari” in Cremona.

Leandro won many prizes during his life. His violins are displayed in World Exhibition for lots of times, including 1895 London and Atlanta, 1898 in Turin, 1900 in Paris, 1906 in Milan and 1910 in Brussels. In 1945, Leandro passed away in Milan.
