Vincenzo Ruggeri (1663-1719) is the most outstanding violin maker in the second generation of the Ruggeris. A prolific maker after Francesco, Vincenzo’s quality is even more delicate and superior to his father’s, especially the deeper flutings and refined purflings near the edge of the body. The curving of the scroll is magnificent. Vincenzo usually used fine-grained spruce for the front, with some occasional exceptions of wide straight grains. The back of the wood is almost broad-flamed. As for the varnish, he preferred orange red or bright golden yellow varnish. Sometimes darker brown varnish is also used. Some of his violins sound dark at the beginning, but we may find it sound powerful and penetrating if listening more attentively. Besides, some of his violins are ideal instruments for string quartets for their amiable lucid tone.
In 1690, Vincenzo established his own workshop. After his father passed away, the demand for violins in Cremona declined gradually; nevertheless, the orders for Stradivari violins started to increase. After 1710, Vincenzo’s production of violins decreased remarkably and the fame of Ruggeri family waned.
