The father of Giovanni Rota (1767-c. 1810) is a descendant of the relatives of Nicolò Amati’s wife. In 1780, the whole family moved to the suburb of Cremona. Giovanni became an apprentice to Lorenzo Storioni in 1787, and lived across from his teacher. He also had frequent contacts with Nicola Bergonzi, also a nearby neighbour. Little was documented about the details of Giovanni’s life; it is said that he once moved to Mantua for a while and stayed there until 1794 when he moved back to Cremona again.
Two violins and one viola made by Giovanni between 1808 and 1809 are labeled as made in Cremona. However, far back in 1804, Count Cozio di Salabue (1755-1840) had already deleted his name from the list of Cremonese violin makers. In addition, in the census of Cremona in 1812, violin makers residing at the time, including Storioni, Ceruti and the Bergonzi brothers were all listed, with the exception of Giovanni. Modern violin experts presumed that Giovanni Rota might have left Cremona once again, or have already passed away by then.
