Candi was born in Bologna, and after working in the workshop of Raffaele Fiorini (1828-1898), he moved to Genova in 1888 and making mandolins and guitars in F.lli Barberis. He established his workshop along with his brother Cesare. Although the works of Oreste were mainly mandolins and guitars, there were still some outstanding violin works. Oreste often used orange and reddish orange varnishes, and Lorenzo Bellafontana (1906-1979) was one of his students.
