Giuseppe Castagnino (1886-1966) was born in Cogorno. He originally learned his luthier skills from his father Pietro Castagnino, who was an amateur luthier. He won a gold medal at the Milan Exposition in 1906. Cesare Candi introduced Castagnino to Giuseppe Fiorini at an exposition in Turin in 1911, and he studied for 40 days in Ferrari and Munich, which greatly influenced his techniques. He spent the rest of his life in Cogomo. Besides the abovementioned awards, he also won silver medals in 1917 and 1919 at competitions in Rome.
He stopped making instruments during WWII, but began making instruments again in 1945 up until his death in 1966. Although his son Roberto Castagnino helped him in his later years, it still did not affect the professional quality of the instruments they made.
Castagnino always used the same models and labels, and the only thing he ever changed was the colors of the varnishes he used during various periods of his career. He signed the labels himself, and also had his own logos on the labels.
