Carlo Carletti (1873-1941) was the first of the Carletti family to become a luthier. Carletti was originally a merchant of antiquities. He became interested in making instruments because he worked with ancient instruments. Many of his clients were important luthiers at that time, including Raffaele Fiorini, Augusto Pollastri, and Leandro Bisiach. Ettore Soffritti helped get his instrument making business started, and provided instrument molds and materials.
Carletti and his friend Anselmo Gotti helped Luigi Mozzani (1869-1943) make string instruments. He worked for Leandro Bisiach. Carletti made instruments with the utmost precision, and his style was a mixture of Ferrara and Bologna styles, but his violins were influenced by Stradivari.
